I've been surfing around blogland this week and kept coming across blogs that take part in 'Tablescape Thursday'. I have to tell you, seeing some of these table decorations, or 'tablescapes' as they are called really had me yearning to join in. The only time I decorate my table is for special occasions like Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter. But I didn't want to just post an old photo, and I don't have any other kinds of dishes or tablecloths that I could use to design something different today so I could join in the fun. . . . . or so I thought!
Dinner tonight is sweet and sour chicken - and THAT gave me an idea. So I quickly ran through the house gathering something here and something there, and printing stuff out on the computer, and LOOK what I came up with. . . . .
I went with a gold and green theme simply because that's what I found around the house. The tablecloth is something I got with Fall in mind a few years ago (and it only comes out at that time of year). I folded this in half and draped it over my round kitchen table.
Then I added my wicker place mats. These have been used often, again usually around Thanksgiving. They are green on one side and brown on the other. Then to give the table a 'Chinese' feel (because I have no Chinese dishes) I printed out some 'characters'. I used these under the platters and as a serviette ring.
I 'borrowed' a plant from the game room (plant and planter from Ikea). And added two little tea light holders (these I had just bought today at Kirklands, and would you believe, again with Fall in mind!)

I have to say, I'm really very pleased with myself :-) And I can't wait to start thinking up other 'tablescapes' now. When school starts back I've told Kristen we are going to get back to eating dinner as a family and we'll make each night a different theme. For instance Monday will be 'Italian' when we can have things like spaghetti or lasagna, Tuesday will be Mexican, Wednesday Chinese... you get the idea. Well, won't it be fun if I can come up with decorating ideas for these kinds of meals?

The only thing missing from this table is 'chopsticks'! I could only find one pair, so I put them in the center of the table and just used 'skewers' for effect on top of the napkins! There's also one plate slightly different from the others, because for some reason I can't find my other plain white plate. I may have left it at my neighbors? Of course no one would probably notice this, but I know, so I just had to point it out to you ;-)Now, this is all set and ready for dinner, and of course you know what happens..... hubby just called to say he'd be home late! Oh well, he'll have to heat his up, I'm getting hungry now so I'm off to have dinner with Kiki.
Bon Appetite!

Well done, beautifully created theme for your tablescape. Goes to show you don't have to purchase a lot of stuff to make a nice setting.

Very creative tablescape it all works together even when you didn't think you had anything to start with. This was my first Tablescape Thursday that I joined because of surfing the web this week also.
You will love Thursdays! I love what you put together here. Isn't it so much fun to "shop the house?"

Happy first TTH! It is lovely..very crisp!
Start thinking about next week..it rolls around quickly!
What a great job of pulling things from around the house and making a fabulous tablescape. I am really impressed with the chinese symbols and the napkin rings. Very well done. I look forward to seeing all the great tablescapes you do for all the other meals as well. I always pull things from every room in the house for a centerpiece and find the neatest things at the Dollar Tree or Goodwill. That way I can vary my tablescapes and still havn't spent any money. Most of my tablecloths come from Goodwill and for around $3 or $4 each that's affordable. Thanks also for stopping by my TT and leaving such gracious comments. I really appreciate it. Hugs, Marty
