to Grandmother’s house we go!
Or so the song goes – but alas, we won’t be going to Grandmother’s house this Thanksgiving, and grandmother won’t be coming to ours :-( My inlaws are in California at the minute and will be there during thanksgiving too. Last year (and the year before last) while they were away we celebrated Thanksgiving with our neighbors (my best friend Cheryl and her family). Cheryl’s mom and dad live a few doors away from us on the corner of our cul-de-sac. They have kindly invited us to have dinner with them the past two years.
We love to do this and spend the day with them, but one thing Jason and I both miss is ‘the leftovers’! You know, the next day (or dare I say, even later that same night) making up another yummy plate of mashed potatoes, turkey, stuffing, gravy etc – it’s just so yummy :-) So, this year I’ve decided I’m making Thanksgiving dinner even if it is for just us 3! and we’ll probably pop over to our neighbors for dessert time. Remember it’s Kristen’s birthday that day too so it will be nice to just stay home and celebrate her too.
Yesterday I started playing around with the dining room table, to get it ready for next week. I always do this well in advance so I can see how things will look and if I need to purchase anything. I try my best to use what I have on hand and keep the purchases to a minimum. As much as I’d love to buy seasonal dishes and centerpieces I know it’s just not cost effective right now and Jason wouldn’t be too happy either! So, using what I had here’s what I ended up with . . .
here’s a view taken while I’m standing on the stairs looking down.
I didn’t bother with a tablecloth this year, I like the look of the wood and that is just a simple ‘paper’ runner I bought at Hobby Lobby last week.
What do you think of the plates? Yes, they’re paper too! It’s a great way (cheaper alternative) to get that season look but not have to pay for the china that only gets used once a year! I’m sure we’ll still eat off ‘real’ plates but I liked using these just for the festive look. You can do the same with a Christmas table setting too!
I created a centerpiece just by using a cake stand, some silk flowers I have, votive candles and a few tangerines from the fridge – I love the splash of orange color!
And of course I had to take some shots later at night with the candles lit . . .
So, what about you? Have you set your table yet? I’m sure Susan over at BNOTP will be having her usual Thursday Tablescape post this week. It’s been a while since I joined in but I think I will this week, and I’ll be sure to check out all the other great table settings too :-)
Have a wonderful day
hugs
Denise

Your table looks pretty. I never would have guessed paper plates and runner. It looks fabulous!
We are not having a crowd for dinner, but for dessert. I am grateful just to be with the hubs and the kids!
Happy Thanksgiving, Den!
XO,
Jane
I like your centerpiece...I may try something similar. Somewhere I saw a centerpiece set into a hollowed out pumpkin. I wanted to try it but am not feeling very ambitious at the moment.
My girls are coming home for the holidays and it will just be the four of us on the day. I'm kind of looking forward to that. We had a crowd last year and will be with a crowd for Christmas so this will be nice. My brother and his wife are coming up Friday so they'll have the leftover meal with us.
Happy Thanksgiving!
It looks great! I'm sure you'll all have a lovely time, especially since it's your little cutie's birthday!
Your table looks lovely, Denise! It's so funny--if you hadn't told us that the runner is paper and the plates are paper, we wouldn't have been able to tell from the photos. This makes me think that I should stress a little less about table settings and just enjoy things a little more.
Can you believe it's almost K's birthday again? I know you're thankful for her!!
The table looks beautiful and I never would have guessed the turkey plates were paper! I believe we have the same dining chairs.
Well, that picture of the sleigh ride drew me right in. :)
I'm am loving your table! What a great idea using the cake stand for a centerpiece! Gonna check out those plates too.

Hi Denise! The table looks great and I wouldn't have guessed the turkey plates were paper! What I do when we don't have Thanksgiving at home is buy a turkey breast. That way you have the nice white meat that everyone wants and you have leftovers for sandwiches.
Jeff's friend suggested Cuddles because he thought it would be hilarious to hear Jeff calling "Cuddles!" ;) He's a joker! He's married to a British lady and he worked in Buckingham Palace as an antique restorer.
Everything looks so beautiful, Denise! I love the centerpiece and your glasses. Great job, very festive and warm! XO ~Liz
P.S. Thank you for commenting on my blog post! =)
Another beautiful table!!
We don't know what we are doing for Thanksgiving this year, so I haven't even thought about a Thanksgiving table...
Have a wonderful time ;-)
Like always looks great like the new pic at the top. We will miss ya!
it looks really pretty! i love your turkey dishes so cute! i've got all my tablecloths pulled out and just playing around with the little details still! xo susan
What a pretty table! Sounds like the perfect idea to have Thanksgiving and birthday at home and then dessert with friends. The leftovers are always so good!
Denise your Thanksgiving plates are gorgeous. It all looks lovely and ready to go.
It's "Show Us Your Life" at Kelly's Korner starting in the morning. It's Laundry, Bonus and or Play rooms so I have more than one post planned for today. You should join in. I think you have joined her parties before.
See you tonight!
~Melissa :)
What an absolutely perfect table setting you have created just in time for the holidays. I just love all of the different textures. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving.
Denise, I wouldn't have noticed that those were paper plates if you hadn't said it. They are really pretty.
I'm glad you didn't put a tablecloth on that table. It looked perfect with the bare wood showing.
About the seasonal plates. I totally get not wanting to break the budget with plates you only use once a year. I don't have very many either. You ought to look for some inexpensive clear glass plates. That way,you can use them over and over on top of pretty paper seasonal ones. I first saw "Mid Atlantic Martha" do that, and I thought it was the best idea! That way, you can be seasonal without spending money on new seasonal dishes.
And, you asked about the pattern from the dishes on our table. They are Johnson Brothers Autumn Monarch.
So glad to have visited this blog!
Happy Thanksgiving!
I love your tablescape! I usually buy paper plates for Thanksgiving since there is typically a crowd here. The clean up is much easier...then I can just enjoy the company. My mom's birthday and my youngest daughter's birthday sometimes ends up being on Thanksgiving. One year we had turkey, dressing, and a Barbie cake! :) Carla
I do love some of the wonderful designs on paper plates -- those are charming for Thanksgiving. You've set a very pretty table!
Very pretty table, I wouldn't have guessed the plates to be paper. Love the napkins...have lots of orange they would go with!
What fun paper plates. I love paper plates for a crowd. I hate to spend forever and a dayin the kitchen cleaning. I am a cook not a cleaner! Very pretty table.
I'm glad that you've decided to create your own turkey dinner, so you'll have those left overs. I always like them almost more than the original meal! You found some perfect paper plates, and your centerpiece turned out beautifully. Thank you for sharing your charming design. Cherry Kay
