Still on the subject of food (I hope I'm not boring you!) This is the book Kristen and I bought at the book store on Sunday :-) It has some really fun recipes in it, and in my quest to have Kristen keep trying new things (I'm convinced one day she'll discover something she just loves) I thought it would be fun for her if she helped me cook more. Not just baking cookies, which honestly she doesn't really help me with much, she just always wants to eat the chocolate chips or 'lick the spoon or bowl'!!

So, yesterday we decided we'd make Swamp Weed! If you enlarge the picture below you will see that is actually guacamole :-) We didn't have ingredients to make fly larvae so we might try that next time. I cut the avocados in half and took out the stone then I gave them to Kristen and showed her how to scoop out the flesh. While she was doing that and then chopping it in to bits in a bowl, I chopped the tomatoes and onion and cilantro etc. Then Kristen mixed it all together. She kept saying she didn't like the smell and she didn't like avocados. Honestly, I don't even think she's ever tried avocado? Why do kids say they don't like something when they haven't even tried it?

So, here's the first taste test. Did she like it?

Well she gave it two thumbs up. SO, she doesn't like guacamole but she does like Swamp Weed!

Actually that was short lived, I put it out on the table an hour later with dinner and when she scooped up a bigger bit with her pita bread (I baked triangles in the oven to make them crispy) she announced that she didn't like it after all?!! Oh well, more for me cos I LOVE guacamole, urm, I mean swamp weed ;-)

Yesterday being Earth Day , I tried to do my bit when I called in to the grocery store for a few things. I bought 5 of their reusable green bags. I have to admit I've been pretty naughty for a while and just let them use plastic when packing my groceries - but no more! I will make a concerted effort to cut down on plastic bags, in fact I won't need to use them any more. I have these bags (which actually were filled with my groceries in this picture, but you just can't see them) already back in the car ready for my next trip to the store. Anything I can't fit in these 5 bags I will ask to put in paper bags :-)

It's overcast today and a chance of a thunder storm looms.

Mmmmm, Swamp Weed sounds good and healthy too. I think I'll get back into the habit of using my own bags too, Denise. For me if I put them in the front seat intead of in the trunk, I'm more apt to remember them.
Hope you're having a great week!
well I think it's a great way of getting her to try different foods. Even if she then decides she doesn't like it!!! Kids! The idea is superb though, to get a child friendly cook book. I wonder why children prefer to eat things with a disgusting name? :O)
love your green bags. I've got a few like that from Marks & Spencer, my favourite has a snowman on it! Once you get into the habit of taking the bags, you won't forget. When I got my string bags, the number of times I forgot to take them with me was unbelievable. Then I just started remembering, and now it's very rare that I come home with a plastic carrier. Some places (M&S for one I think) are starting to charge for bags, to encourage reusing. Each time I go to do the weekly shop, I'm always impressed with the amount of people I see with their own bags in the trolley, ready to pack their shopping in. :O)
Thanks for your email!

meant to ask, did you get your storm? I thought we would have one here today. It started off misty - almost foggy - then got really chilly but stayed bright. Then it turned grey. I had a thumping headache (always get weather related headaches, which is the main reason I am not fond of summer, all that storminess pains my head!), which cleared up as soon as it started raining. It's still hazy and grey out there, though the sun has come out too.
I must shove off. enjoy your day! xxxx
Well, I, for one, LOVE Swamp Weed!! Just wish I could eat it right now.. doesn't agree with Amanda's tummy :(
Hi Denise! The cookbook sounds cute! I know in school, we used to read "Stone Soup" and get kids to eat basically a veggie soup. Have you read that book to Kristen? It's a good one. Like your bags! Brooke is very popular so I think it could be Syesha even tho she did better. Jason's pretty popular with the young girls, too. Should be interesting! (((Hugz)))
Hi Denise,
I too LOVE 'swamp weed', & so does Elliot & Emily. I admire the way that you keep plugging away to get Kristen to eat more variety & healthy. She will love you for this, & thank you in the future. Love how you share photos with everything too. Have a great day Denise! Hugs!
Hey Niecey girl!
I am really watching these food posts with great interest. Unfortunately I have a 10 (almost 11) year old who has such a limited taste in foods, it scares me for her future health. : (
I really feel to blame because by the time she got here, the other 4 kept our life so busy running and going and doing, that we ate on the run a lot (fast food - bad mama) So she loves fast food and hates home cooking. : (
It's very hard to persuade them to TRY something with an open mind if they have looked at it and determined already that they do not like it. SIGH. God help us BOTH!
I like your bags! This is a painless way to reduce the plastic trash! I hate it when I see the plastic bags fluttering in the wind, getting stuck in trees, floating in water, flying down the road, etc. UGH... Nasty!
You girls be good!
See you again soon!

Hi Denise, it's hard to get kids to eat new food. Some are acquired tastes. Anyway you're doing great with Krisen & it's nice that she cooks with you. It reminds me of a commercial about kids food supplement where a little girl says she doesn't like anything her moms put in the cart at the supermarket. I guess you have seen it on TV. Have a fantastic day, hugs
We're just about to head to the shops for some jimmy-jam shopping, but will be back later tonight to catch up on your posts. Hmmm...I just tried and the web site loaded just fine http://bearessentialsgraphics.com/
give it another try.
The reason my post says Friday morning, is we are 17 hours ahead of you here in Australia, so it is indeed Friday morning...actually it's 1.16pm Friday afternoon now. We are a day a head you might say and when you're awake we're usually asleep and vice versa. That means when Melissa moves to the US I'm going to have to stay up very late or get up very early to talk to her because of the big time difference. Have a great weekend...I'm keen to read your posts. Big huggles xxx
Swamp weed huh? How inventive someone is to come up with that! It looks yummy. Maybe KiKi's taste will change as she gets older and she will enjoy lots more. I used to hate and I mean really hate cauliflower when i was little, and if my mum snuck it in any which way, I always could detect it. The really odd thing was, when I was pregnant with my first baby, I had constant cravings for cauliflower! I remember getting Dave to go and buy me a cauliflower one Sunday, and I cooked it up and ate a whole dinner plate of nothing but cauliflower...the thing I could never stand! I wouldn't worry too much about Kirsten, as long as she gets enough of the good things, she'll be fine. She certainly looks healthy. My kids have always eaten lots of fruit and veg, so they were easy, but Dan can be a little tinker sometimes.
