Need inspiration . . .

. . . if anyone has any, could you send it my way? :-) Remember by 'Ballard Inspired' buffet I painted a few months ago and the shelf I made after seeing Traci's lovely tutorial? At Christmas it looked like this. . .

the shelf was a great place to show off my hand-painted ceramic santas (that I hand-painted I might add) but once all that was packed away it has looked like this for the past two months. . .

Rather sad looking don't you think? Those are my martini glasses just sitting there on the shelf from Christmas. I just don't know what to do with the whole buffet/shelf thing! This week I thought I would try to use some things I had around the house. I gathered up some candle holders, and some picture frames, and had a 'play around'. . . .

more frames perhaps?

This is how it looks as of now, and I'm not happy with it? I removed the tassel from it's holder and placed it back on the door knob of the dresser, so that 'thing' on the top left of the shelf has to go (until I make or buy another tassel!)

I don't mind the candles and picture frames, it's more the shelf I'm not happy about? I collect Willow Tree ornaments, I've just had a thought about putting those on the shelf? Hmmm, and perhaps a runner on the buffet? Should I put the lamps back on there? I've put them in the hallway on the new entry table I got for there.

To be honest, I kinda liked the buffet in the hallway?

Should I put it back there and move the hall table with the lamps in to the dining room? If anyone has any ideas/thoughts I'd love to hear them, please. . . . pretty please!

I'm linking this post to Marty's Tabletop Tuesday, perhaps a few more visitors will mean a few more ideas! Thanks for stopping by.

Luv your black buffet...you might want to add a LARGE item on your shelf. Hope you have a FUN week!

How about something really big and with a lot of impact hanging above your shelf or leaning on it. The buffet does look really good in your entry. Ahhh - decisions, decisions. It will turn out wonderfully, it will just take the right inspiration piece.

I like it in the foyer. Where ever you put it, I would put a big picture above the shelf and go from there.

I don't know if that helps or not:)

Such a pretty buffet and it looks gorgeous in either place. I would maybe take one of the lamps from the entry table and place it on the buffet and then how about a grouping of plates and platters displayed on the shelf and hung on the wall. You could also work a mirror into that arrangement. Then some flowers, some of your frames and a lovely bowl or pitcher on the buffet top along with your candles. Just some ideas, I don't really know your taste, but it's fun to experiment. Thanks so much for joining the party. This is so much fun. Hugs, Marty

awww, Honey...I feel your pain! I struggle with such arrangements, too. I think its genetic & you have to be born with the decorator gene. I wasn't.
However, blog hopping sure gives me good ideas. I like what Marty suggested. I'm too "balanced" in how I arrange things. I need to layer more & do "off-center" occasionally.

I think the buffet really gets shown off to its best in the foyer. I don't know if it is just the photo's but you don't get to appreciate it fully in the first shots.
I wish you luck in your decision making.
fondly,
Rett

I left a comment on your knitting blog, but I wanted to say hi here too! I am terrible when it comes to decorating shelves! I like it with less frames though.
Have a super Tuesday! Love & hugs xx

I tend to like the buffet with the shelf, but then, it isn't my hallway without it. :-) What if you were to put the photos on the shelf rather than the glasses or whatever. I really did like the lamps on it, so if it were me I'd put the lamps back. But with the photos on the shelf, it gives you space to play with on the buffet.

I like it in the hallway with the mirror. Mirrors are great! They just help reflect the light, and you get to check your look one more time before you go. I think it looks great!

I do love it in the hallway. But you are living there and know how you love it best. It is fun to move things around. I ALWAYS have trouble with shelves and tops --trying to decide what should go on them etc!!

Hi! I just found you through Texas Blogging Girls. I'm glad I did. You have a lovely blog and am happy to follow you. As far as the buffet goes...It looks great in both places. I'm not that great at creating vignets so I don't feel qualified to offer suggestions. Hope you post the photos after you've decided what to do. I'm sure it'll be great!

Hey sweetie,
So you're after some inspiration, I'm thinking something big also, something to make a statement. Here is a site that might inspire you...she always has great ideas
http://www.susieharrisblog.com/

So how is your sweet Mam doing at the moment? Is she any more settled? I continue to keep her in my prayers, and all of you. Is Brenda going to see Mam every day? I did that for my mum for 6 weeks straight day after day (with three kids) and I was exhautsed. Is your brother going to be living close enough to still share the visiting with Brenda? Sure hope he can.

Wow you guys are doing great this year with getting your veggie patch under way early. So is winter officially over? Crazy you only recently had snow there and now you're spring planting.

We're having lots of rain, but it's so needed and it's actually nice to have the days cooler so it's all good. Hope the rest of your week goes well. Luv ya muchly xoxoxo

Sometime putting objects at different heights helps. I use stacks of old book, often turn wine glasses over and use them as pedestals,or try picking an accent color and finding things all over the house in that color and group them together. Often vines or flowers will help to soften the look. Just keep playing your eye will tell you when you are right. Thanks for coming by and leaving a nice comment. Come again soon.

Gosh I wish you were on the HGTV forum with me and this would be easy peasy.. I do mock ups for the folks over there. They post a blank photo and I put different items over it in my art program. Then you know just how something will look before you spend a penny or make a single nail hole.. Just using the pics you've posted here the first two things I do is paint the mirror black to match the buffet and turn it long ways to hang - versus the way you have it. that would give you room on both sides to perhaps hang decorative or plain plates for that matter and hanging the mirror that way would draw the eye UP, rather than side to side where its almost touching the lamp shades.. did I make that clear as mud for ya , giggle.. wish I could show you in a photo.. you are welcome to email me and we can work on it that way..

put something in the subject line so I know its you and dont delete it.
happy to help if I can.

I didn't read any other comments so forgive me if it's repeated.
For some reason I see much larger items needing to be on it. Show us what you do!
